Queensland Rugby League has today paid tribute to John Moore, a “true giant of the game” who served rugby league in Far North Queensland and beyond with distinction.

As a former Cairns District Rugby League president, QRL North chairman, QRL board member and North Queensland Cowboys founding member, Moore gave a lifetime of service to the game.

Few could match his administrative achievements and service to grassroots rugby league.

He was also president of Cairns Brothers, founding board member of the Northern Pride and its predecessor the Cairns Cyclones.

On the field, he was a dedicated player and referee for many years.

Such was his standing in the game, he was bestowed life membership with the CDRL, QRL North and the Northern Pride.

Following the sad news of Moore’s passing, the tributes flowed on social media last night.

“There are not many people who have given as much time and effort to rugby league in FNQ as John Moore,” said Danny Maher.

Pat Bailey said: “I had the privilege of working with John for many years. He was completely dedicated to the sport. He not only guided us through many a hard time, but he always knew what was expected of us all to make sure the correct way was the right way. A dedicated family man to Heather and the boys but also to rugby league.”

Former NRL and State of Origin player Adrian Vowles wrote:

“Very sorry to read this news of John’s passing. An absolute champion of a man. Condolences to John’s family and friends.”
