Brigginshaw & Upton Named NRLW Co-Captains

Rugby league veteran, Ali Brigginshaw, and four-time premiership winner, Tamika Upton, have been named as Co-Captains of the Broncos NRLW squad for the 2025 season.

The pair have collectively played more than 80 NRLW games and have an extensive history playing together for the Broncos, Queensland and Australia.

It’s the first time the Club has named NRLW Co-Captains, who will guide the squad through its longest ever season.

Rockhampton-born Upton made her debut for the Broncos in 2019 and won two premierships with the Club before signing with the Newcastle Knights.

The 2023 Dally M Medallist returned to the Broncos this season and said she’s happy to be home.

The 2023 Dally M Medallist returned to the Broncos this season and said she's embracing her new role.

“With co-captaincy, you can bring out each other’s strengths, you can work as a team and bounce off each other," Upton said.

“I’m comfortable in my own skin now and I think that helps with this role.

“Princey [Scott Prince] has put a good base together with this team in the last few years so I have quite an easy role to just slot in and bring my strengths to it.”

This club has been very successful for a reason and I’m so excited to not play against them, that’s for sure.

Tamika Upton Broncos Co-Captain

Brigginshaw – who is one of the Broncos “originals” – has captained the Club since the competition began in 2018.

The 35-year-old has a plethora of captaincy experience, also leading the Queensland State of Origin and Australian Jillaroos teams consistently over the past years.

She said she was thrilled to have Upton back in the side and is looking forward to leading with her support.

Getting Tamika back was just the best thing to happen this year.

Ali Brigginshaw Broncos Co-Captain

“She's turned into a great leader and I'm just excited to be working with her, it's always better to work as a team.

"We seem to have similar ideas and it's been good sounding board for me to be able to go to someone and say, 'what are you seeing, what are you feeling?' so I'm really enjoying the help."

Broncos NRLW Coach Scott Prince said it was the perfect time to share the role.

“With her [Tamika’s] leadership qualities both on and off the field, I just felt like together they could really handle that job as a unit,” Prince said.

“Just relieving some pressure off Ali so she can focus on her footy and finish her career the way she wants to, Tamika is the perfect person to do that.

“Having Ali by her side that’s been there and done it… both can rely on each other to help each other through."

Two is better than one.
