The second year of regulated online gambling and sports betting in Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, has seen operators attract 63 billion dollars in bets from players in the region.
The figure was announced by iGaming Ontario, the regulator of the province’s iGaming market, and covers the period between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2024. The Ontario market officially opened to private online casino and sports betting operators on 4 April 2022, before that the province had seen a monopoly of a state-owned gambling operator. There are currently 47 online casino and sports betting operators licensed in Ontario, which run a total of 77 iGaming websites.
The last quarter brought in the highest activity when it comes to wagering, amounting to a total of 17.8 billion dollars. This figure grew over the year, starting at 14 billion dollars in the first quarter, moving up slightly to 14.2 billion dollars in the second, before jumping to 17.2 billion dollars in the third quarter.
Online casino games, including live dealer games, were again the star of the show, contributing 51.6 billion dollars in wagers out of the total of 63 billion. Sports betting attracted 9.7 billion dollars in wagers, while peer-to-peer poker accounted for the remaining $1.6bn.
