Scientific Games Corporation, the powerful American provider of gaming products and services, has announced that three Canadian operators have made single-event sports betting available to their customers through the OpenSports platform.

Single-event betting became legal in all Canadian provinces on 27 August, and Scientific Games helped the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, Loto-Quebec and the Atlantic Lottery Corporation make this option available from day one.

Previously, bettors in Canada have only been allowed to bet on multiple events, but once Bill C-218 was approved by the Parliament, betting on single events became fully legal and regulated. Scientific Games have been offering their OpenSports betting suite all over the world, and now it became the first regulated sportsbook platform provider to offer singles betting in Canada.

Canada is a very important market for Scientific Games, the American company even has a manufacturing facility located in Montreal. In April, the American giant announced the launch of a new online iLottery subscription program in partnership with the Western Canadian Lottery Corporation. That announcement came just a few months after Scientific Games decided to extend its contract with Loto-Quebec, a partnership that has been unfolding for over 50 years.

A Much-Awaited Moment

The Canadian state-owned gambling operators have been lobbying for single-event betting for quite some time, and their desire has finally become law in June 2021. However, the day of 27 August was the official launch date for single-event betting in Canada.

“We’ve been looking forward to this moment for a long time,” said Scott Eagles, Manager of Sports Betting at Atlantic Lottery Corporation. “We’re beyond excited to be offering our players a safe and regulated alternative to place single-event sports wagers.”

On the other hand, Marc Crean, Commercial Director at Scientific Games, underlined his company’s ability to adapt very quickly to regulatory changes, and expressed his enthusiasm for the future of the Canadian sports betting industry over the coming years.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) has also prepared a solution for single-event betting, a platform that was developed in-house and that was called “Proline+”. The OLG betting solution was also launched on 27 August.
